Mauvaise Genre

 –

Where punk meets poetry, fusing sound, movement, and identity

Mauvaise genre مريم is a French-Algerian performer, choreographer, and visual artist based in Brussels, where they study at the Royal Academies of Fine Arts. A non-binary lesbian with roots in DIY and activism, Mauvaise genre began their journey working as a night caretaker at queer events. Realizing the centrality of their body in their work, they seamlessly blend movement research, sound exploration, writing, poetry, and visual media. Their art features a mix of punk-inspired scenographies and innovative archival practices, creating a unique, fluid expression of identity and creativity.

What do you do with anger when there’s no one to listen or guide you through its transformation? Where can you channel your most intense emotions when you struggle to manage them? This performance delves into these questions by crafting a dreamlike space that merges the aesthetics of nightlife zones, abandoned bedrooms, transit hubs, and liminal spaces. Through evocative vocalizations and a deeply personal exploration, the artist turns raw, unprocessed feelings into a form of “low poetry,” inviting the audience to experience and reflect on the profound journey from turmoil to artistic expression.
