Collective Care at Horst is rooted in the idea that care is a shared responsibility. It is not a service provided to you, but an environment we build together, both on and off the dancefloor.
This approach draws from practices developed within queer and BIPOC communities, where safer spaces have long been a vital response to exclusion in nightlife. For us, it means actively looking out for one another, being mindful of the space you occupy, and respecting the boundaries of others.
If you want to dive deeper into the origins of our approach, you can read our editorial: Soft Power: Collective Caring for the Club.
The questions below make this approach tangible, so you know exactly what it looks like and how to be part of it.
Collective Care exists in different forms across the festival.
There is a dedicated space where you can step away from the crowd: quieter, lower-stimulation, with room to sit, rest, or talk to someone. Preventive materials are available there, in collaboration with Safe ‘n Sound.
You’ll also find Collective Care team members across the site both roaming and at fixed points. They’re approachable, visible, and there to support.
But Collective Care is not limited to a team or a space it also lives in how we treat each other throughout the festival. This is why we kindly ask you to take part in it yourself.
You can reach out if you experience or witness harassment, racism, transphobia, homophobia, ableism, misogyny, or any form of disrespectful behavior.
If you’re unsure, that’s already a good reason to reach out. Whether you feel overwhelmed, uncomfortable, or simply need a moment to reset, you’re welcome. It’s always better to come for something small than to wait for something to escalate.
Be aware of others, you’re sharing this space. Don’t assume, ask. Respect personal space. Don’t touch, stare, or approach someone in a way that could make them uncomfortable. We do not tolerate any form of discrimination, harassment, or disrespectful behavior. If boundaries are crossed, the Collective Care team may step in.
You can approach the Collective Care team directly, or ask any staff member to connect you with us.
We listen first, and take your experience seriously. Depending on the situation, we offer support, help mediate, or, if necessary, escalate. Removal from the festival is always a last resort, but it remains an option in cases of harmful behavior.
Collective Care starts with you. Check in with others. Respect boundaries. Be aware of your impact. If you see something that feels off, don’t ignore it, you have the agency to act, even in small ways.
You can approach the Collective Care team directly, or ask any staff member to connect you with us.
You can reach us at collectivecare@horstartsandmusic.com with any ideas, feedback, or concerns. Your feedback helps us evolve and sharpen how we practice care.
