Mobile Furniture is a modular system of robust public furniture designed by Brussels-based Bureau Barbier Bouvet Created specifically for Asiat Park, the pieces respond to the site’s hybrid identity: serving as a gathering space, performance zone, and everyday public park.

Each unit consists of a steel base plate and a heavy wooden block, bolted together but easily reconfigured. The elements can be arranged as a tribune, picnic table, dance platform, or even used individually for sunbathing or casual lounging. Their raw, durable materiality withstands intense public use, while remaining adaptable and open-ended.

The furniture doesn’t require storage. When not used for Horst festival or Horst Club, the sculptures remain scattered throughout the park, ready for spontaneous occupation. A custom hand-pulled cart is included as part of the design, enabling the pieces to be moved by collective manpower. This cart becomes both a functional tool and symbolic gesture, highlighting the tension between mobility and permanence, flexibility and groundedness.

Barbier Bouvet’s design echoes their belief in minimal intervention and maximal engagement: the furniture is simple but intentional, inviting users to shape their own spatial and social configurations.

Bureau Barbier Bouvet is a practice for the fields of design and contemporary art.

The Bureau is the conceptual and economical orientation of the personal practice of Stephane Barbier Bouvet. Economy of gesture and means, sustainability and a critical approach are at the centre of the practice. Following the application of our methodology and systems of production to the contemporary art field and collaborations with artists, we are now expanding the practice to the domestic space, industrial production and public commissions. We encourage a democratization of the practice by applying its uncompromising qualities to more available productions. 

Mobile Furniture is een modulair systeem van robuust openbaar meubilair ontworpen door het in Brussel gevestigde Bureau Barbier Bouvet. De stukken zijn speciaal ontworpen voor Asiat Park en beantwoorden aan de hybride identiteit van de locatie: ze dienen als ontmoetingsruimte, performancezone en alledaags openbaar park.

Elke eenheid bestaat uit een stalen voetplaat en een zwaar houten blok, aan elkaar geschroefd maar gemakkelijk te herconfigureren. De elementen kunnen worden opgesteld als tribune, picknicktafel, dansplatform of zelfs afzonderlijk worden gebruikt om te zonnebaden of te loungen. Het ruwe, duurzame materiaal is bestand tegen intensief publiek gebruik, terwijl het toch aanpasbaar en open blijft.

De meubels hebben geen opslag nodig. Als ze niet gebruikt worden voor het Horst festival of de Horst Club, blijven de sculpturen verspreid door het park staan, klaar voor spontane bezetting. Een op maat gemaakte handgetrokken kar maakt deel uit van het ontwerp, waardoor de stukken door collectieve mankracht kunnen worden verplaatst. Het ontwerp van Barbier Bouvet weerspiegelt hun geloof in minimale interventie en maximale betrokkenheid: het meubilair is eenvoudig maar opzettelijk, en nodigt gebruikers uit om hun eigen ruimtelijke en sociale configuraties vorm te geven.
