Horst thrives on its community, shaped and energised by many hands. Born from volunteer spirit, over 700 volunteers bring Horst to life annually, making communal work our heartbeat. At Horst Atelier, volunteers dive into diverse roles, from festival production to arts and stage design. It's an opportunity to deepen skills, connect globally, and experience Horst's core commitment from the front row. Join us to co-create and share in our collective passion.
Horst Atelier presents a dynamic four-week programme, uniting participants to collaboratively create the immersive festival and visual arts programme. We invite you to join us for a minimum of one week, each beginning on Sunday evening with an introductory get-together and ending on Friday. Only the last Atelier week runs from Saturday to Thursday. Our days are filled with creativity and collaboration from 09:00 to 18:00.
We provide accommodation, essential sanitation, meals, drinks, and engaging activities throughout like talks, workshops, and group visits to Kiosk Radio. Each week offers unique experiences and, in return for your contributions, you'll receive a three-day festival, and the possibility to buy a camping ticket with 50% discount.
Production of contemporary art installations.
Horst's arts programme showcases global contemporary art across various disciplines. Behind the seamless aesthetic lies an intense preparatory process. Collaborating with our in-house arts team, production manager, and artists such as Kenza Vandeput and Sounak Das, you’ll assist in de-installing installations and bringing new artworks to life. This role offers a deep dive into artistic practices, requiring attention to detail and a strong sense of responsibility. Remember, the beauty of art is in its making, which also includes more hands-on but equally important tasks like preparing venues, mopping floors, and tidying spaces. Join us for a behind-the-scenes adventure into the world of art production.
Scenography and arts installation.
Horst's arts program is more than an open-air exhibition, it’s a celebration of contemporary art, performance, and interactive activities. This year, we push boundaries by turning the park inside out, inviting artists and collectives to reimagine spaces and create surprising experiences around every corner.
This week-long workshop offers a hands-on opportunity to collaborate with our arts team, production manager, and like-minded enthusiasts. You’ll contribute to spatial installation by one of today's leading perofmance artists, Joshua Serafin, gaining deep insights into scenographic practices. From rigging lights to dressing spaces, this immersive experience demands creativity, precision, and a passion for crafting transformative environments.
Foodhall & roof construction.
While the natural charm of Asiat Park is a wonder to behold in itself, our mission is to elevate its magic. As a scenography collaborator, you’ll join hands with our Architecture team, weaving art and functionality into the very fabric of the festival. Your canvas? The entire terrain. From crafting intimate hangout spots to adorning entrance and bar structures, each task is an opportunity to rethink our very site. Imagine building a 60m long counter in the food hall, not just as a structure, but as a piece of art. And it’s not just about beautifying spaces – you’ll also bring functional art to life, ensuring signage is as aesthetically pleasing as it is informative. Here, every detail contributes to an immersive festival experience that is as enchanting as it is unforgettable.
Enhancing the festival’s aesthetic, from structures to details.
You’ll be working with the architecture team to elevate the scenography at Asiat Park. Known for its natural allure, the park becomes a vibrant canvas blending functionality with artistry. Volunteers are key in integrating artistic and architectural elements to guide and captivate attendees. Their work ensures that every element—from installations to sideline entertainment—harmoniously enhances the festival’s overall visual look.
Transforming Japanese knotweed into eco-friendly roof coverings.
Together with Atelier Fanelsa and the Biodesign Lab of the Technical University of Munich you’ll transform the roof of our beloved Vesshcelll, also known as, The Pit into a sustainable, state of the art covering. We’ll begin by exploring the potential of bioregional materials, focusing on Japanese Knotweed harvested from the festival grounds. The first participants will set up a production line to create thin, flexible roofing sheets. In a second week, we continue our journey into inventive and regenerative architecture by working on the dried membranes created during the first week. In the final week, we’ll focus on completing the roof and defining the performance space. You will apply the waterproof coating to the last set of dried membranes and eventually secure them to the greenhouse structure. The result will be a regenerative, novel roofing—designed with ecological responsibility and community participation in mind.
A collaborative stage design by Leopold Banchini & DVS1.
This year's festival has an exciting new addition: a seventh stage, built on a site that was previously unused. This new stage is a special project designed by Swiss architect Leopold Banchini and American DJ and producer Zak Khutoretsky, also known as DVS1. They have worked together to create a stage where the design purely revolves around sound. Sound isn't just an extra part; it's the main focus. The idea is to make the physical space and the sound influence each other, creating a unique experience for festival-goers. This new setup goes beyond normal speaker setups and makes the festival more immersive, changing the way people experience music and space.
Building a public skatepark.
In true Horst fashion, the ateliers create infrastructure that serves both the festival and the local community. This year, over a period of 3 weeks we will remodel the existing skatepark on our site. The design by Jean-Benoît Vétillard (FR) will create new flows alongside the iconic columns of Stand Van Zaken, and integrate the current structure better into the Park. During this atelier you will discover the diy building process from the ground up to a functional and welcoming skatepark for the city of Vilvoorde. Opening up a number of possibilities to discover everything from shaping slopes, making large woorden formwork for casting, welding copings all to create the ultimate smooth skatesurface. This atelier takes an in-depth look at making, mixing, and shaping concrete. Unleash your inner Oscar Niemeyer.
Interior architecture & furniture making.
Be part of transforming Asiat Park into a vibrant hub for the local community! We’re turning an old military waiting room into ‘Nightshop’: a dynamic youth space that combines creativity, culture, and community. This exciting project was designed by Alter & Baukreisel, a renowned design studio specialising in community-driven projects that blend architecture and social engagement. The design was developed in close collaboration with local young people—the future users of the space—to make sure it reflects their needs, aspirations, and ideas. Join us and be part of shaping the future of Asiat Park!
Get hands-on with sound, light, terrain, and everything in between.
This is where the action’s at. Horst stands for a top-drawer festival production, which requires a great deal of physical work. Raising walls of sound, hanging signage across the maze, and protecting the site with a great deal of fences don’t even cover half the load of what you’ll be doing. Knowing a thing or two about festival production is definitely a plus, and owning a forklift license or similar will double the fun. You might be asked to help construct the bars and assist the campsite crew. Be mindful that production tasks also include some more preparational work such as mopping floors or cleaning out stock areas. Time to roll up the sleeves!
Serve, bake, brew, and learn while keeping everyone energised.
Feeding the force: food will have to be put on the table in order to keep everyone healthy and satisfied! You’ll be spicing things up in the kitchen together with the chef(s) to prevent energy levels from draining. Experience in the kitchen is a nice plus but not obligatory. It goes without saying that health- & safety instructions are to be respected. Besides the main meals, you'll master the art of snack-time and coffee breaks to keep spirits and caffeine levels high. Lastly, you'll set the table in order to make sure everyone can be seated and enjoy their meal to the fullest. This also includes collecting chairs, providing cutlery and glasses etc. Clearing the table and dishes are done by all Atelier participants.
