Alter is an architectural collective founded in 2024 as an ASBL (non-profit organization). Deeply rooted in the northern quarter of Brussels, the group first emerged as a laboratory where diverse individualities—originating from the international architecture studio 51n4e—came together. Primarily focused on full-scale construction using reused materials, the collective believes in the act of building as much as in the act of designing.

For Alter, reuse in architecture can lead to playful, innovative, and unforeseen results, especially when integrated into a collaborative process. So far, Alter has had the opportunity to work with various associations, local authorities, and universities to organize workshops and participatory construction sites. The aim is always to bring practice and theory, design and construction, together in a polyphonic collective act.

Baukreisel is an interdisciplinary group of architects, political and social scientists, and economists who – after years of informal activism – founded Baukreisel e.V. as a non-profit organization in Berlin in 2022. The organization is dedicated to maximizing the re-use of building materials through research, consulting, architecture practice, teaching, and creative activism – confronting and challenging the material and immaterial damage of current building practices. It advocates for a fundamental reorientation of the building industry by re-evaluating and critically questioning existing processes.

Baukreisel focuses on research into sustainable and circular construction, environmental protection, especially climate protection, and the development of a critical awareness of the social significance of building culture. Next to this they are in constant search of beauty within existing structures and the reuse of materials, seeing aesthetic and cultural value in what already exists.

They find joy in their work through the creative transformation of materials and the exploration of new possibilities in circular construction. Spread across Germany, Baukreisel thrives on collaborative work within the group and through exchanges with other teams, fostering a networked approach to sustainable building. Their work is driven by the belief that reusing materials is not only an ecological necessity but also an opportunity for innovation and architectural quality.

De groep is diep geworteld in de noordelijke wijk van Brussel en ontstond eerst als een laboratorium waar verschillende individualiteiten - afkomstig van de internationale architectuurstudio 51n4e - samenkwamen. Het collectief richt zich voornamelijk op het bouwen op ware grootte met hergebruikte materialen en gelooft evenveel in bouwen als in ontwerpen.

Voor Alter kan hergebruik in de architectuur leiden tot speelse, innovatieve en onvoorziene resultaten, vooral als het wordt geïntegreerd in een samenwerkingsproces. Tot nu toe heeft Alter de gelegenheid gehad om samen te werken met verschillende verenigingen, lokale overheden en universiteiten om workshops en participatieve bouwplaatsen te organiseren. Het doel is altijd om praktijk en theorie, ontwerp en constructie samen te brengen in een polyfone collectieve handeling.

Baukreisel richt zich op onderzoek naar duurzaam en circulair bouwen, milieubescherming, met name klimaatbescherming, en de ontwikkeling van een kritisch bewustzijn van de sociale betekenis van de bouwcultuur. Hiernaast zijn ze voortdurend op zoek naar schoonheid binnen bestaande structuren en het hergebruik van materialen, en ziet esthetische en culturele waarde in wat al bestaat.

Ze vinden plezier in hun werk door de creatieve transformatie van materialen en de verkenning van nieuwe mogelijkheden in circulair bouwen. Verspreid over Duitsland, gedijt Baukreisel op samenwerking binnen de groep en door uitwisselingen met andere teams, waardoor een netwerkbenadering van duurzaam bouwen wordt gestimuleerd. Hun werk wordt gedreven door de overtuiging dat hergebruik van materialen niet alleen een ecologische noodzaak is, maar ook een kans voor innovatie en architectonische kwaliteit.
