Vesschell is born out of the idea of rebirthing materials. It refers to a vessel (a container), a cell (that exists through symbiosis and repetition), and to a shell (a protective new skin for an existing pavilion). Working with discarded big bags, truck tarp, reused plastic foil, recycled merchandising meshes, and cotton on which these textures have been printed, the construction materializes the logistics that keep the transport routes of our globalized society afloat.

Established in 2014, SERAPIS is a hybrid art, design and fashion collective based in Athens, Greece. It creates work inspired by the aura of the oceans and the industries related to the sea. The brand aims towards an expansion of the boundaries of artistic production and distribution, and functions like a multimedia ocean-themed novel, a contemporary seascape.

For its commission at Asiat, the worlds of the sea and the land were brought together. Deadstock fabric from former collections inspired by nautical imagery were sown together with packaging materials from construction industries in Belgium. The labour often invisibilized, the hidden stories of the people who make this global network possible, are impregnated in the upcycled materials. Marks, creases, rips, tags, faded colours: they all pay a tribute to the trajectories that these materials have travelled, to the hands through which they have passed. Celebrating the idea of networks, coproduction and collaboration in different phases through time and space; everyone who has contributed to the making of Vesschell has signed and tagged its floor and roof.

“Vesschell” est né de l’idée de faire renaître les matériaux. Il fait référence à un vaisseau (un conteneur), à une cellule (qui existe grâce à la symbiose et à la répétition) et à une coquille (une nouvelle peau protectrice pour un pavillon existant). Travaillant avec des sacs de transport mis au rebut, des bâches de camion, des films plastiques réutilisés, des mailles de merchandising recyclées et du coton sur lequel ces textures ont été imprimées, la construction matérialise la logistique qui maintient à flot les voies de transport de notre société mondialisée.

Établi en 2014, SERAPIS est un collectif hybride d’art, de design et de mode basé à Athènes, en Grèce. Il crée des œuvres inspirées par l’aura de la mer et de ses industries. La marque vise à élargir les frontières de la production et de la distribution artistiques, et fonctionne comme un roman multimédia sur le thème de l’océan, un paysage marin contemporain.

Pour sa commande à Asiat, les mondes de la mer et de la terre ont été réunis. Des tissus en stock provenant d’anciennes collections inspirées par l’imagerie nautique ont été semés avec des matériaux d’emballage provenant d’industries de la construction en Belgique. Le travail souvent invisibilisé et les histoires cachées des personnes qui rendent ce réseau mondial possible, sont imprégnés dans les matériaux recyclés. Marques, plis, déchirures, étiquettes, couleurs délavées : ils rendent tous hommage aux trajectoires que ces matériaux ont parcourues, aux mains par lesquelles ils sont passés. Célébrant l’idée de réseaux, de coproduction et de collaboration dans différentes phases à travers le temps et l’espace, tous ceux qui ont contribué à la réalisation de Vesschell ont signé et tagué son sol et son toit.
